The Truth Behind Charcoal Toothpaste - Does it Work?

OK, so we’ve heard the claims. Some dental pros out there think charcoal toothpaste isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. So, what’s the truth?

Fresh Smile Clinic, a private dentist based in Huddersfield, takes a look so you know the facts about activated charcoal oral health products. They’re all the rage right now, but are they just a well-promoted health trend?

Research has just come out examining a range of charcoal-based oral health products and it seems to show that there isn’t enough lab data out there to tell us about their efficiency or their safety.

But many professionals out there, including ourselves, are worried that thousands of people here in the UK are using such products without knowing what they’re made of and maybe taking their eyes off tried and tested methods of protecting teeth and gums.

Reacting to the topic, our very own Dr. Kirrin Punia, said: “Activated charcoal at the moment is a health ingredient in vogue, and we’ve seen it feature in lip balms, deodorant, face masks and most recently, toothpaste; which is where we come in!

“The number of powders and charcoal toothpastes on the market is increasing at a rapid rate and the celebs among are endorsing them en masse, but it is possible shoppers are being misinformed.

“For starters, when we see those celebrity smiles endorsing these products they’re teeth are already brilliant white thanks to teeth whitening and cosmetic work. So it’s not a direct result of the charcoal.

“Many of these toothpastes which openly claim they are whitening our pearly whites more often than not are only getting rid of surface stains and don’t offer long-lasting results.”

Make sure you do your research!

For toothpaste to do its job properly it needs to contain the correct amount of fluoride to prevent teeth from disease and decay, but many charcoal activated pastes fall way below recommended levels.

Our advice? Make sure you do your homework before using activated charcoal products and remember, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

We all want white teeth, but before you invest in new so-called revolutionary products, consult your dentist first to make sure it’s safe. Your dentist will be able to tell you what suits your teeth best and what your safe, course of action should be.
